When in 2003 Societe Generale Bank ran into murky waters Okocha had $1 million (N136 million) deposited in the bank. His efforts to recover his money became a national issue, with the then president promising to help him regain his deposit. The National Assembly also fell prey to a collapsed bank, with millions of naira trapped. It is still uncertain if Okocha and millions like him have got their deposits back.
